Security is an important issue – especially in the modern world where most computers are connected to the internet, whether just occasionally, or almost all the time. While there is a lot to be gained from being so easily connected to just about anyone, anywhere on the planet, you also need to keep both yourself (and your family) and your data safe – because you’re connected to just about anyone, anywhere on the planet!
RISC OS lacks some of the modern protections found on other platforms and these days is only really benefiting from security through obscurity – so the big question is: What if anything can you do as a RISC OS user to keep yourself and your data safe and secure?
That’s the subject the Midlands User Group (MUG) will be looking at when they next meet, and investigating what options there are to protect RISC OS systems, with demonstrations of some of the things you can do.
The meeting this time is an in-person event – not online – and will take place at 2:00pm on Saturday, 3rd June, at:

Note: This is not a change of venue, just a change of name – the meeting is in the same place they have been held since the group moved home a few years ago (shortly before the pandemic).
The location is easily reached by both public transport and by car – for the latter, it’s very close to M5 Junction 5, and for the former there are bus stops on the nearby A38 and within easy reach (via buses that use those stops) of Droitwich Spa or Bromsgrove railway stations.
As well as the headline topic, the group will also be discussing and finalising their plans for the meeting that will take place the month after – the MUG Mega Meet, a slightly longer online session that is designed to sit somewhere between a typical (online) user group meeting and a full-blown show, with a small number of guests demonstrating their wares or giving talks, and more time to socialise and discuss things between.
The event is set to run from 11:am until 4:00pm on Saturday, 1st July using the Zoom video conferencing system, and currently there are two external guests lined up – RISC OS Open Ltd (ROOL) and AMCOG Games – as well as something from the group itself. There is room for at least one more, though, so if you’d like to be that one, you might wish to contact them about it!
